'To Do' List: Get a Mammogram

October 19, 2009 2 min read 8 Comments

About a year ago, I re-connected with several college sorority sisters through FaceBook.   I have enjoyed our quick chats and catch-ups that try to recount 25 years in just a few short sentences.
  • One friend is excited to have all of her kids graduated from college,
  • Another is just getting started with her family and recently returned with a toddler from Russia,
  • One friend is starting a new couture, cupcake bakery,
  • and one friend is fighting for her life.
I joined the 'Praying for Tracie Shelby and her Fight Against Breast Cancer' FaceBook page and have had her on my prayer list for about a year. Tracie and I pledged KAΘ at Baylor University in the spring of 1981.  Although Tracie and I weren't BFFs, we will forever be connected through our strong Θ bond.    So recently, when Tracie was named the 'Honorary Survivor for the 2009 Susan G Komen 19th Annual Race for the Cure' in Greater Nashville, I was so excited for her and her family.

I am reminded that God does hear and answer our prayers.   I am also reminded to schedule my annual mammogram and would like to remind you to, too.

Congratulations Tracie,  God is Good!

Tracie is second row from the top, smack dab in the middle wearing a white shirt.  I'm over on the right, middle row.  I would love for all the rest of you sisters to leave a post i.d.- ing yourself!
Special thanks to Harriet Vaughan, Reporter, THE TENNESSEAN, for allowing me to share her video on Tracie and to Laura Black Shepard for coordinating it all.

I’m on the front row, second from the left, in the dark green sweater between M’Lissa Bradford Howen and Jan Lill Work. Tracie and I were roomies at Baylor during graduate school. She is one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever known. Love ya, sister!

Cheryl:

This is a great way to put it together with a very important reminder! I’m vigilant about my mammogram – the disease took my grandmother and my Mom is a 16 year survivor.

As for where I am in the picture above, you can’t miss me in the bright green cords on the front row!

Cheryl/Tracie-
I am a 2 1/2 year survivor. I just had my “symmetry procedure” 2 weeks ago to finalize my reconstructive surgery that I had last October. Like Tracie, I also had my ovaries removed to decrease the chance for recurrence. All I can say is that Tracie spoke my feelings exactly. I am a different person since diagnosis. A better one, I dare say. Get your mammograms, request ultrasounds and even MRI’s if you feel something is wrong. YOU ARE YOUR BEST ADVOCATE. Don’t let ANYONE tell you otherwise! Theta love, Ann Debes Watkins (Baylor Theta pledge class 1979)

Thank you Laura, and thanks for you help on this too! btw – you still look absolutely the same as in ’81 – you gotta bottle that stuff and sell it! (Laura is front row, 4 from the left)
